There is the Yoga that can be seen, and the Yoga that cannot be seen.

The word “Yoga” is most commonly associated with the asana or physical practice that has become popular in the states as a workout regime and fashion statement. The poses may look pretty or impressive but, there are many more layers to Yoga than just wrapping your leg around your head and standing on your fingertips. Oh and, contrary to popular belief, you actually don’t need a $140 mat or $80 leggings to practice either...
The purpose of asana (which really just means ‘seat’) is to prepare the physical body for stillness and meditation. In order to achieve that stillness, many of us need something tangible to help direct our focus. Hence, why the poses were created. And, as we’ve evolved as humans in an increasingly stimulating world, we yearn for more creative and, sometimes, extreme movements to capture our attention. If practiced intelligently, I don’t see anything wrong with creative movement. But, when we force our bodies into injurious, unsafe, contortionistic shapes just for attention and likes on IG, we’re missing it. We’re living from a place of acquiring instead of a place of inquiring.

It’s not about the pose.
In fact, there are other ways to practice that don’t require extreme flexibility or strength like breath work (pranayama), meditation, chanting etc. But, whichever tools you choose to practice with, consistency and commitment are key.

The key to what? What is it really all about?
Ah, now you’re getting it.
Let’s begin.

I fell in love with yoga as I was floating out of my first Savasana.

I’ve been playing sports like volleyball, softball and gymnastics my whole life, but none have ever come close to giving me the experience I have on the mat.

I’ve always been intrigued by the elaborate systems that make up the human body along with its deep connection to the mind, breath, and spirit. When I started practicing asana and meditation on a regular basis, windows and doors in my mind were opened that I never even knew existed.

That, and my natural tendency to ask ‘why?’, led me to my first teacher training where I began to dive deeper into the practice and, synonymously, my Self.

I’ve had the honor of studying under a wide variety of teachers, including my students. With over 700 hours of training (and much more to come), I share my perspective in public & private yoga classes and workshops all over the world.
Forever a student, I hope to inspire anyone and everyone (in my class or not) to discover their full potential and live a life full of happiness, health, compassion, and love.
